Nigerian actor Deyemi Okanlawon has weighed in on the controversy surrounding singer Simi, specifically responding to her remarks after netizens dug up and misinterpreted her old 2012 tweets amid the fallout from the Mirabel case.

Deyemi dropped a message on his X account stating: “When women say ‘STOP rap*ng women’… Your response cannot be ‘what abt men/children’ neither can it be ‘what abt false accusers’… Your reply MUST only be YES!!!” He added men must hold others accountable and called for broader efforts against all abuse, using #EndRape.”

It all started when TikToker Mirabel initially claimed she was raped in her home, prompting Simi to passionately condemn rape culture on X, urging men to “STOP raping women” and hold peers accountable.

When Mirabel later admitted to fabricating the story, the backlash intensified as users went as far as bringing up Simi’s decade-old tweets from her time helping at her mother’s daycare.

Simi addressed it directly on X: “I haven’t been on Twitter today – but someone brought a few of my old tweets to my attention and I can’t not address it.” She clarified the tweets were innocent observations of children being cute/mischievous while she hustled music, insisting “Nothing I tweeted was from perversion” and reaffirming her lifelong anti-rape stance: “I said stop raping women. I stand by it.” Her team deleted some for family sensitivity.
