Hollywood actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie lent her star power to an art exhibition honoring the Chibok schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram more than a decade ago.
The event marked the unveiling of Statues Also Breathe at the Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (MACAAL) on February 8, 2026.
The installation at the Museum, features 108 terracotta portraits created by French artist Prune Nourry in partnership with Nigeria’s Catharsis Arts Foundation, Obafemi Awolowo University, and families of the missing girls.
Inspired by the ancient Ife heads of Nigeria, the project began in 2022 when families entrusted photographs of their daughters to Nourry. She sculpted initial clay heads, which were cast by women potters from Ilorin using traditional Ile-Ife clay.

Over 100 Nigerian students then personalised each sculpture during an emotional workshop, with mothers and survivors present to recognise their loved ones.
The exhibition, which premiered in Lagos, is on view in Marrakesh through early 2027 and is expected to continue touring before finding a permanent home in an African museum.
More than a decade after the abduction of 276 girls, around 100 remain missing.
Catharsis Arts Foundation co-founder Prune Nourry emphasised the project’s dual mission: keeping global attention on the missing girls while celebrating Nigerian artistry and empowering young creators.
