Former two-time world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital in Nigeria following a devastating road accident on December 29, 2025, that claimed the lives of two of his close friends.
The crash occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when the Lexus SUV Joshua was traveling in as a rear passenger suffered a tyre burst.
Joshua, 36, sustained minor injuries and was treated at facilities including Lagoon Hospital Ikoyi and Duchess International Hospital in Ikeja, Lagos, where he remained under observation.

In a joint statement issued late on December 31, 2025 (New Year’s Eve) by authorities from Lagos and Ogun states, officials confirmed Joshua’s discharge: “Anthony Joshua was discharged from hospital late this afternoon though heavy hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends he was deemed clinically fit to recuperate from home.”
Following his release, Joshua, accompanied by his mother, made an emotional visit to a funeral home in Lagos to pay his final respects. As confirmed in the official statement and multiple reports, the bodies of Ghami and Ayodele were being prepared for repatriation to the UK later that evening, with arrangements underway to return their remains to their families and loved ones in Britain.
Preliminary investigations by Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) continue, highlighting speeding and improper overtaking as key factors, while police have indicated potential charges against the hired driver of the SUV —who has also been discharged and is cooperating. The driver of the stationary truck remains under investigation.
