Family of former heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua has publicly questioned the value of continuing the criminal trial against the driver involved in a devastating December crash that claimed the lives of two of the boxer’s closest friends and team members.

Adedamola Joshua, uncle to the boxer, while speaking with newsmen at the family’s home, described the incident as a tragic but unavoidable accident. “We are very lucky that our son didn’t die,” he said.
“But taking this man to court is something we don’t see any reason for. This is my own personal opinion that the trial is not really worth it. Because we think accidents can happen anywhere in the world.”

The comments come on the same day the accused driver, 46-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, appeared before Sagamu Magistrate Court in Ogun State. The hearing was adjourned to February 25, 2026, reportedly to allow prosecutors time to seek further legal advice from the state Attorney General.

Kayode faces four charges stemming from the December 29, 2025, collision on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway: dangerous driving causing the death of Joshua’s personal trainer Latif Ayodele and strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami, both 36 and his close friends, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and operating without a valid national driver’s license. He has pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of 5 million naira with sureties.
As the case heads toward its next court date, the Joshua family continues to mourn the loss of two men who were more than colleagues as they were brothers in every sense.
