Before Burna Boy received his first Grammy nomination in 2019, he released a debut studio album called Leaving an Impact For Eternity (L.I.F.E) in 2013. The album wasn’t only renowned for the lyrical qualities that emanated from the lips of the Rivers State-born musician. Still, it also influenced the perception of the young demographic of that era. Specifically, Burna Boy introduced the term ‘cool cat’ due to his fashion sense and charming personality.
L.I.F.E was where it all began for Burna Boy on the national scale. As the years transitioned, the singer-songwriter became an antihero; he was admired for his lyricism, but he infuriated his audience, especially Nigerians, with his utterances and unapologetic animosity towards his fellow countrymen.

L.I.F.E: How Good Was The Debut Album Though?

Burna’s debut studio album was released on August 12, 2013, by Aristokrat Records.
The album serves as the follow-up to his second mixtape, Burn Identity, and sold 40,000 copies on the first day of its release.
The popular tracks, ‘Like to party’ and ‘tonight’, are off the album, Leaving an Impact for Eternity. Upon its release, Burna, who is otherwise known as Big 7, quickly endeared himself in the hearts of the Nigerian youths- his style of music differed from what was trending at the time.
The album was produced entirely by Leria and features guest appearances from 2face Idibia, M.I. Abaga, Timaya, Olamide, Reminisce, and Wizkid. Despite being in the industry, Burna made it apparent that his objective is to attain the top echelon of the music food chain; he wasn’t here to be ‘small’. Interestingly, the Grammy award winner has never sold himself short, he never wants to be minimal just to appeal to his listeners, instead, he is renowned for being braggadocious and narrating his life story through music.
The Impact of L.I.F.E

Nigerian Entertainment Today ranked L.I.F.E 10th on its list of the 12th Best Albums of 2013. The album’s music draws heavily from the music of Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, and Bob Marley. L.I.F.E. received generally positive reviews from music critics, who applauded its production. It was nominated for Best Album of the Year at the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards, and peaked at number 7 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart in August 2013.
Burna Boy: What distinguishes Burna from his contemporaries?

Burna Boy, a maverick, will go down in history as one of the greatest vocalists to grace the music scene.
A touch of madness today, a phenomenal expression of his undeniable talent tomorrow, makes him an enigma. You can’t pigeonhole this controversial figure.
The following are three things that make the self-acclaimed African Giant stand shoulders above his peers following the release of his debut studio album over a decade ago:
A Sense of grandeur:

Burna Boy has never apologized for his God-given ability. You can choose to hate him or love him, albeit you can’t turn a blind eye to his lyrical dexterity.
Equally, you can’t deny his excellence and execution on the mic. Burna Boy recognizes this; that’s why he is a multi-Grammy award nominee. He doesn’t participate in that ‘faux-humility’ mask most of his peers wear. Dude doesn’t give a flying pea about your nut, specifically, Burna takes no prisoners.
The Prognosis of a Problem Child:

When Burna Boy’s ‘Tonight’, ‘Run My Race’, and ‘Like to party’ debuted in late 2012 off his debut studio album, L.I.F.E, everyone expected him to fade into obscurity sooner rather than later. Falling off stage here and beating up Mr 2kay there; a lot of people didn’t give him a chance.
He was blackballed, labelled a problem child; they weren’t wrong. He was infuriatingly condescending sometimes. But sometimes, you need darkness to appreciate light.
Burna Boy’s mother and current manager, Mrs. Abosede Ogulu, decided to redefine his career and take charge of his career. She shone light on him, and the rest is history today.
International Appeal:

A Grammy award winner, a Billboard award winner, multiple times BET Award winner… Need not say more, Burna Boy is in the world of his world. Go on YouTube this week and watch Burna perform alone at several of his international music concerts. It all commenced with the release of his debut studio album, L.I.F.E.
