Burna Boy has continued to disclose various reasons why he would not go down in history as one of the most endearing musicians. After commencing his music career as somewhat type of social activist and honourable voice of a generation, the singer-songwriter continued to embrace those whom he had previously spoken against.

In a trending video earlier in the week, the singer-songwriter was seen introducing Seyi Tinubu, the son of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is the president of Nigeria, to Nigerian-born UK artiste, Dave. He was quick to instigate predominantly negative reactions from netizens, specifically because of the personality and perception that Burna Boy had established for himself in previous years.

Burna Boy Is No Fela

In the past, Burna Boy often sang about social issues and condemned politicians via his music. Listening to songs such as ‘Yawa’, ‘Ye’, and ‘Monster You Made’, the Grammy award winner mirrored the ideology and cadence of veteran Nigerian musician and Afrobeats connoisseur, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. In his prime, Fela became renowned for waging war against the ruling parties (including during the military rule and democracy regime in Nigeria), he influenced a generation, and his approach to music has often been copied but could never be replicated.

Burna Boy

Nigerians expected Burna Boy to become the next outspoken musician who would wage war against those in authority, albeit, that wasn’t necessarily his intention. Instead of standing up against injustice and agitating for the wellness of his people, the Rivers state recording artiste instead assaults his fellow countrymen on stage during live performances.

As a matter of fact, at the 2025 New Year event that took place in Lagos state, Burna Boy cut his performance short because a fan mounted the stage. He sees his own people who supported his career since the 2010s as his enemies.

Here is what Burna Boy has to say about the Fela comparison:

“Also, all that Burna boy and Fela talk needs to die now,” he wrote.

He continued, “I’m not Fela, im Big 7. I’m all about positivity, peace and prosperity but honestly I’d rather kill you than die for you.”

Celebrities have no honour, enjoy their music, embrace their craft, but, do not expect too much from someone who is equally trying to survive.
