CDQ, popular Nigerian rapper, has opened up about the reason he abandoned his banking career to pursue music full-time.
In a recent interview with Echo Room, the “Nowo Soke” crooner revealed that he initially took up a banking job to honour his late father’s wishes. However, he quickly realised that the corporate world was not where his heart truly belonged.
CDQ disclosed that during his time at the bank, he often found himself scribbling song lyrics during office hours instead of focusing on work tasks, a sign that his passion for music was too strong to ignore.

“I was just doing the banking job because of my late dad. That was his dream for me,” he said. “But every time at work, I found myself writing music instead of doing my job. That was when I knew I wasn’t fulfilled.”
He recalled the moment he made the bold decision to quit the job, confiding only in close friend and music producer, Masterkraft, who had been offering him support, even lending him suits to wear to the bank.

“I couldn’t even tell my mother or family. I just left the house and moved in with Masterkraft at the studio,” CDQ shared. “I told him banking is not my passion. Even if music doesn’t pay me back, I’d still be happy doing it.”
CDQ said he was confident they would find success soon, telling Masterkraft that they would make a breakthrough within six months. True to his prediction, their big break came even sooner, securing a deal that moved them from the trenches to a better life in Lekki.
The rapper rose to prominence in 2016 with the release of his hit track Indomie, featuring Masterkraft and Olamide. The song’s remix, which included superstar Davido, further cemented CDQ’s place in the Nigerian music industry.
