Nollywood actress, filmmaker and entrepreneur Bolaji Ogunmola has recently spoken about the financial challenges facing Nigerian movie producers, particularly the difficulties of making substantial returns from YouTube and cinema releases.
Ogunmola explained that the size and location of an audience can have a major impact on how much a filmmaker earns from digital platforms.
According to her, producers whose viewers are predominantly based in Nigeria and other African countries do not earn as much from YouTube as creators whose audiences are concentrated in countries with higher advertising rates.
She said: “Nigerian producers don’t make much money from YouTube when most of the audience is from Nigeria or Africa.”

She also spoke about the financial realities of releasing films in Nigerian cinemas, arguing that producers do not receive the full revenue generated by their movies.
She added: “In cinemas, producers only get 30% of the revenue their movies generate, and the government still takes tax from it.”
