Country music legend Dolly Parton left her millions of fans worldwide a final message of love as her family announced her death on Tuesday at age 80.
Her nephew, Brian Seaver, delivered the emotional farewell and revealed that Parton had asked him years ago to make a video announcing her death when the time came.
The message, posted on Parton’s official social media accounts, has since become one of the most poignant elements of the farewell to the singer, songwriter, actress and philanthropist.
Seaver, the son of Parton’s sister Cassie, had served as her head of security for more than two decades, following in the footsteps of his father, Larry.
“This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality,” he said.
“As her head of security for more than two decades, a role my father Larry held before me, I have imagined the heaviness of this moment, but haven’t truly felt it until now.”
The announcement was made on behalf of the Parton and Owens families and was delivered with a mixture of grief, pride and affection.
Seaver said it was an honour to announce the death of a woman who had been not only a global superstar but also a beloved member of his family.
“It is an honor, an honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness,” he said.
But Seaver quickly made a distinction between the grief being experienced by those left behind and Parton’s own fate.
“Sadness lies with us, not with Dolly,” he said.
“Dolly has lived in the light, and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by Carl, her parents, and countless others who have watched her and longed for her to meet them in the heavens.”
The reference to Carl was to Parton’s late husband, Carl Dean, who died in March 2025 after nearly six decades of marriage.
‘She opened doors for generations’
Seaver also reflected on the extraordinary influence Parton had on his own family and on generations of entertainers.
He recalled first going on the road with her as a child in the early 1980s and witnessing her career develop up close.
“Dolly opened doors not just for me, but for her entire family to reach the potential we didn’t even know was possible,” he said.
But, he added, her impact went far beyond her relatives.
“Dolly also opened doors for generations of singers, songwriters, musicians, and dreamers from every walk of life and across every continent. By her example, we believe that anything was possible.”
Seaver described Parton as someone who never accepted that a door was closed to her.
“She never saw a door she couldn’t open, and the door she opened made and changed history,” he said.
‘So have you’
Perhaps the most striking part of the tribute was Seaver’s reminder that Parton had become part of the lives of millions of people who had never met her.
“My family and I have shared a lifetime of beautiful memories with Dolly, but so have you,” he said.
“She has always been on your television, your record player, your CD, and on your phone playlist, becoming an extended part of your family, whether you liked it or not.”

Parton wrote some of country music’s most enduring songs, including Jolene, 9 to 5, Coat of Many Colors and I Will Always Love You, while also becoming an acclaimed actress and major philanthropist.

Seaver offered one of the most memorable descriptions of Parton’s life when he compared her work to that of her father.
“Dolly was a farmer, just like her daddy. He farmed the soil, she farmed songs and happiness,” he said.
The line captured the extraordinary transformation of Parton’s life—from a child raised in poverty in rural Tennessee to one of the most recognisable entertainers in the world.
Her family has also said that Parton wanted a private funeral and had previously expressed a very personal wish concerning her final resting place.
According to Seaver, she wanted to rest “in a beautiful bed of plush cotton” after a lifetime of performing in her trademark rhinestones.
“After a life wearing heavy rhinestones, she finally deserves to be comfortable and have some rest,” Seaver recalled her saying.

Seaver concluded the emotional announcement by addressing Parton by the names she was known by within her family.
“Rest in peace, Aunt Dolly, Aunt Granny, Gigi. May God bless Dolly Parton, and may God bless you all,” he said.
Then came the words that have perhaps touched fans most deeply:
“She will always love you.”
The sentence also appeared as Parton’s final message shared by her family on her official social media account: “I will always love you.”
It was an especially fitting farewell for a woman whose career was built around songs about love, loss, family, faith and human resilience.
