Nigerian singer and songwriter, Oludipe Oluwasanmi David professionally known as Spyro has shared a candid account of his struggles in the music industry, revealing the harsh realities he faced after collaborating with high-profile artists Davido and Mayorkun.
In a recent interview on HipTV’s “Trending,” Spyro recounted his experience of being left in the shadows despite having a hit song featuring the two industry giants.
According to Spyro, the song’s success led him to believe that his breakthrough had finally arrived. However, he was shocked when he was suddenly forgotten, and his former collaborators became unreachable.

“I had a song back then, and I had Davido and Mayorkun on it. I thought my life was about to change,” he recalled. “The song came out and it was big, but suddenly everything went back down. They stopped picking up my calls.”
He revealed that he would often break down in tears, feeling devastated by the sudden change in his fortunes. “I’d sit on the staircase and cry,” he confessed.
In addition to sharing his personal struggles, Spyro also criticized some gospel artists, accusing them of prioritizing money over genuine faith. “People who claim to be gospel ministers are just artists. They are just in the business to make money. They’re just like us in the Afrobeat industry,” he said.
However, Spyro praised singer Tems for her consistency and strength, calling her a powerful role model for young women in the music industry. “She’s really talented and has remained true to herself. That’s the kind of example we need,” he added. “Tems is holding out decently. One of the biggest in the world. She has it together, we should put Tems out there for the world to see, for our girls to look up to as role models.”
