Fireboy’s “Jealous” Is The Redeeming Song on the YBNL Mafia Family Album

In December 2018, Olamide released the YBNL mafia family album which did not really enchant music lovers.  It was therefore surprising to find a song by Fireboy titled “jealous” on the album that has been my new ear worm.

Olamide is known for using his platform to spur potential stars into the limelight.  Couple misses here and there, but having listened to this song (Jealous) over and over, I’m convinced that Fireboy DML is one for the future, boy is smooth with the vocals, vibes and pays attention to his lyrics. Let’s just say Olamide has struck gold with this signing.

The opening instrumental on “Jealous” was enough to get me interested, the Caribbean groove and melodic chants perfectly made like that of a classic Indian movie, did wet my appetite for a sweet song Cracker Mallo did an absolutely fantastic job on the instrumental, I particularly love the blend of the chants and the strings. It’s the type of instrumental that already provides a solid foundation for the artiste, to deliver an amazing song.

Just one taste and I’m wanting more, wetin you give me is not enough o, You know say me I no wan fall in love, but wetin you give me is not enough o, Oh baby am getting jealous, don’t wanna see you with anybody o

While it’s one thing to have a perfect instrumental, it’s another to deliver the right lyrics, with the correct melody and suitable delivery. The opening verse of the song clearly shows Fireboy DML knows his music, he delivered his lyrics with a perfectly soothing voice texture, making the blend of his vocals and instrumental smooth like fine wine.

“Ghana girl with the Melanin, take it easy, sho fe pami ni? I wanna have you forever, omo your loving is all I need.”

A case of love at first sight for a “hard guy” who’s probably used to being a play boy with no love in his play boy book of tricks. One encounter with a “Ghana girl with the melanin” and everything changes immediately, he transforms from playboy to a jealous lover, who’s willing to do everything to have his girl forever.

What have you done to me, you’ve got me chasing after you, I’m falling for you, and I’m calling on you.

A case of confusion, yet conviction is the case, He doesn’t know how he suddenly became a lover boy so easy, wondering what the girl did to him, but yet very certain and sure within himself that she’s the one for him, so much He’s willing to chase after his love. It’s almost as though his life would be meaningless with his new found love.

“I’m getting jealous already o, I’m getting jealous don’t want to see you with anybody o, I’m getting jealous already o already o…”

One of the secrets of making a song that’ll linger in the minds of your audience, is to make the hook very simple and very catchy, one that people can sing along with ease. Fireboy definitely applied this secret on the hook of “Jealous”, it’s a melodic hook, and it’s an instant sing along type. I must emphasize at this juncture that Fireboy knows his music, the adlibbing on the hook is another proof of this.

“Jealous” is a great song I dare say, it’s simple yet captivating and well written. It’s the type of song that cuts across all demographics, one that even the strictest of music critics will give a nod to, you should give it a listen.
