Nigerian singer Rema has finally opened up about the motivation behind his rebranding ahead of his sophomore album “HEIS” release last year.
Rema’s new image, which features tattoos, smoking, and darker colors, sparked controversy among fans who felt it was a betrayal of his original personality. However, Rema clarified that his rebranding was simply an artistic expression inspired by Japanese anime series Naruto character Itachi Uchiha.

In a recent post, he wrote that the album cover and his new image symbolize “the truth masked as illusion, love buried under what y’all thought was betrayal.” Rema explained that the change in sound, aesthetics, and appearance were all part of this artistic vision.
“HEIS, the Anniversary. I expressed a lot of surface level reasons why I released this project over a course of interviews when it came out but, here are few “SYMBOLIC” details that wrap around the ENERGY of the project I kept for myself but now, I’d like to share.
“Consider this an Author’s note; The cover was inspired by Itachi in Naruto. The Truth masked as illusion, Love buried under what y’all thought was betrayal ( change of sound, smoking , looks, aesthetics & choice of color ).”
Other artists, like Shallipopi, have also faced similar scrutiny over their public personas and artistic choices, with Shallipopi claiming he uses cigarettes for aesthetics despite appearing to smoke in pictures and videos.
