Nigerian rapper Phyno has offered an interesting perspective on the money made by Igbo entertainers, arguing that some of them can earn more consistently than artistes who perform at major international venues such as the O2 Arena and London Stadium.
According to the rapper, the difference comes down to the frequency and nature of their performances.
While mainstream Afrobeats artistes may depend heavily on hit songs, tours and major concerts to generate substantial income, musicians who specialise in traditional Igbo entertainment have a steady stream of private events to perform at throughout the year.
Phyno explained that these performers are regularly booked for weddings, birthday celebrations and burials, allowing them to earn money almost every weekend.

He suggested that their ability to perform repeatedly at such events gives them a financial advantage that is often overlooked when comparing them with globally recognised Afrobeats stars.
He said: “Igbo superstars make more money than artists who perform at the O2 Arena and London Stadium because they perform every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at weddings, birthdays and burials, while Afrobeats artists need a hit song before they can make money.”
However, while international concerts attract attention because of their size and prestige, private celebrations remain a major source of income for many musicians.
These events can provide performers with regular bookings without requiring them to maintain a chart-topping record.
