In early 2021, Ayra Starr burst into the spotlight with her self-titled extended play via Don Jazzy’s Marvin Records. Her objective was to simply capture the attention of her audience, who are predominantly Gen Zs. At the time, she was only 19, hence, she became of her generation at a tender age.
The debut EP contained 5 tracks that easily resonated with her audience. The song “Away” was one of the most-played songs in the early parts of 2021. Before ‘Rush’ and ‘Hot Body’, ‘Away’ was the single that put Starr on the national radar; people wanted to know who the scintillating songstress was.

According to information gathered, Starr started her career by covering several songs by popular artists on Instagram. Ayra Starr posted her first original song on her page in December 2019. This brought her to the attention of record executive Don Jazzy.
She signed her first recording contract with Mavin Records, Jazzy’s record label, and began working on the EP in January 2020. Ayra Starr collaborated with producers Louddaaa, Dayogrey, and Don Jazzy on the record and co-wrote four of its songs with her brother. Musically, the EP combines elements of R&B and neo-soul with Afropop percussive rhythms. Lyrically, it touches on themes relating to teenage angst, romance, and coming-of-age experiences.
Ayra Starr received generally favorable reviews from critics. It reached number 1 on Nigeria’s iTunes and peaked atop the Apple Music charts of countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Sierra Leone, and Gambia. It spawned the hit song “Away,” which charted at 4 on the Billboard Top 50.
Ayra Starr: Where is She Now?
Starr has released two studio albums. The first album, 19 & Dangerous, was released in 2021 to a positive reception from music pundits, critics, and fans. She composed the anthem for her generation; specifically, she designed a concept album that followed how she transitioned as a Gen Z girl from adolescence into early adulthood.
