Nigerian teenage ballet dancer, Anthony Madu, has continued to make the country proud as the documentary based on his inspiring journey, MADU, recently won an Emmy Award.

Madu, first caught global attention in 2020 after a viral video showed him dancing barefoot in the rain on the streets of Lagos.

That short clip changed his life, opening doors of opportunity and leading to his relocation abroad to further his studies in ballet.

A new documentary, MADU, has been produced to capture that transformation.

Speaking to Arise News, Anthony alongside Nigerian filmmaker Kachi Benson and American director Matt Ogens share how the film was made.

According to the film makers, the goal was to bring to light an honest story that reflects Anthony’s struggle, background and determination.

According to them, the documentary is not just about ballet, but about hope, courage, and what it means for a Nigerian child to dream beyond limitations.

The trio also explained the challenges that came with shooting the film. From funding, to gaining trust, to capturing the right emotions.

The team said it was not an easy task. But their joint effort and commitment to authenticity helped them in achieving their goal.

Benson noted that it was important for the story to remain real and relatable. Ogens added that the production was about finding the balance between strong visuals and emotional truth.

For Anthony, the experience is another reminder of how far he has come. What started as a dance in front of a small house in Lagos has now placed him on the world stage. The Emmy win, according to the team, is proof that Nigerian stories can compete at the highest level.

The filmmaker said, “This award is a big encouragement. But more than the recognition, we want people to see that dreams are valid, and every child deserves a chance.”
