Veteran Nollywood actress, Mercy Johnson, has come under heavy criticism for promoting a menstrual brand reportedly selling for N25,000.
This comes after the actress shared an Instagram post of herself and her daughter, Purity, promoting the brand during its launch campaign.
The actress, who was recently introduced as an ambassador, described the menstrual pack as an all-in-one period-care pack designed for girls aged 9 and above.
The product launch has since triggered backlash on social media, with many Nigerians questioning the affordability of the menstrual kit amid the country’s harsh economic realities.
Several users argued that the reported N25,000 price tag makes the product inaccessible to the average Nigerian girl, particularly at a time when many struggle to afford basic necessities.
Some others described the campaign as tone-deaf, citing the growing concerns that millions of women and girls lack access to safe and affordable sanitary products in Nigeria.
Others, however, argued that the package’s contents are worth the price tag.
“Nigerian celebrities can be so out of touch when they jump into business ventures. Who exactly was Mercy Johnson aiming to sell those N25,000 sanitary pads to?” a X user wrote.
“I’m not even a fan of Mercy Johnson but surely y’all can see she created that period care box with her daughter and girls of that age, in mind. Y’all haven’t met young girls entering puberty and it shows with these comments,” another X user added.
“Mercy Johnson should stop with that fooling. If she’s really serious about helping the girl child and making efforts to end period poverty in Nigeria, she should donate those pads,” a X user wrote.
One remarked, “Mercy Johnson’s 25k period kit for teenagers is so thoughtful, and it’s something you buy one time to introduce your teenager into puberty. Then you can buy subsequent normal pads after.
“See it like a cute gift box to soften the worries and anxiety the child might have . I wish I got one before my first period. If we have period care gift box for adults why can’t we have for budding teens?”
Another added: “How many girls for kogi state fit afford this thing wey u Dey sell how many girls for okene fit buy am ? ???? How many of your distant relatives in ihima fit afford 22k pad ???? Unah go say unah Dey protect the girls child … but pad. Na 20k … omorihiohalakawu nini.”
