In a poignant viral video, an elderly Nigerian woman has shared her emotional story of how traditional tribal marks affected her opportunities for international travel during her working years at the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST).
The woman recounted that while she worked at NIPOST, many of her colleagues were given opportunities to travel abroad, but she was consistently overlooked or denied opportunities because of her prominent facial tribal marks.
“My tribal mark hindered me from traveling out of Nigeria. Everyone we worked together at NIPOST that year traveled out except me,” she explained.

Tribal marks, a longstanding cultural practice among various Nigerian ethnic groups, particularly the Yoruba, were historically used for identification, beautification, and social status.
