Daddy Showkey, the veteran Nigerian singer and ghetto music icon has opened up about how Grammy award-winning star Wizkid played a key role in introducing him to the world of social media, particularly Instagram.
In a heartwarming conversation during a video call with British-Nigerian music producer Maleek Berry, Daddy Showkey recounted the moment that changed the way he connected with fans and the digital world. According to the legendary Ajegunle-born singer, it all started during a casual visit to Wizkid’s house a few years ago
“I had gone to visit Wizkid at home, and during our time together, I noticed a lot of buzz happening online,” Daddy Showkey said. “Wizkid had made a post about me, and suddenly I was trending on Instagram. People were talking about me, tagging me, but I didn’t even have an account back then.”

Curious about the sudden surge in online attention, the music legend, real name John Asiemo, asked Wizkid how Instagram worked. That simple question opened the door to a new digital journey.
Showkey revealed that Wizkid not only took the time to explain the platform in detail but also personally helped him create an account, guiding him step-by-step through the process.
“Wizkid told me, ‘Egbon, you need to be on Instagram. People love you and want to see you online.’ He helped me open the account and showed me how to use it,” he recalled.
But Wizkid wasn’t the only one who extended a helping hand. Daddy Showkey also credited fellow music star KCee, one of the members of the now-defunct music group Kc Presh, for giving him valuable tips on how to navigate and grow on the app.
“After opening the account, KCee also stepped in. He showed me how to engage with fans, how to post, and how to stay relevant online. He really helped me understand how social media works,” Showkey added.
In a post shared on his Instagram page, Daddy Showkey expressed deep appreciation to both Wizkid and KCee for their kindness and support.
“I had a special call today from @maleekberry and I shared a story of how @wizkidayo introduced me and also helped me open my Instagram account, and how @iam_kcee also shared knowledge on how to navigate the app,” he wrote. “Life is about learning, and applying the knowledge is key to the life we live now.”
The post has since sparked admiration from fans who praised the camaraderie between the younger and older generations of Nigerian artists. Many lauded Wizkid and KCee for showing respect and support to a veteran who paved the way in the Nigerian music industry.
Daddy Showkey, known for his grassroots influence and pioneering efforts in the ghetto music genre during the late 1990s and early 2000s, continues to remain relevant in conversations around Nigerian music and culture. Though his era predates the digital age, he has embraced new platforms to stay connected with fans, thanks, in part, to the generosity and guidance of those who came after him.
This story highlights not only the importance of intergenerational support in the music industry but also the power of humility, learning, and evolving with the times.
