Nigerian singer Ruger has shared the challenges he faced after leaving his former record label, Jonzing World, in a controversial manner.
According to Ruger, his departure led to a backlash from both fans and industry practitioners, with many predicting his career would suffer. The public sentiment in Nigeria portrayed him as ungrateful, causing some fans to cancel him and colleagues to distance themselves.
Ruger revealed on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast that the transition was far from smooth. “After leaving the label [Jonzing World], there were a lot of comments about it. Some people were saying, ‘This is the last year you’re going to tour’, ‘This is the end’, ‘You’re finished’,” he recalled.

To bounce back, Ruger had to start over, rebuilding his system and network from scratch. “I was battling cancel culture. I had to meet a lot of people and reintroduce myself. I was doing a lot of things from the scratch,” he explained.
Despite the stress and struggles, Ruger credited his inner strength for helping him triumph over the setbacks. He exited Jonzing World in 2024 to start his own outfit, Blown Boy Entertainment, following a fallout with D’Prince.
