Morayo Afolabi-Brown, the Nigerian media personality, has responded to critics who attacked her over her support for President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election.

Afolabi-Brown came under fire on Friday, July 11, 2025, following a social media post in which she suggested that President Tinubu should consider handing over power to an unnamed politician.

In the post, she criticised the politician’s eagerness to lead, sarcastically proposing he should be given six months to showcase the “magic” he claims he can perform.

Amid the backlash, the television host defended her stance, insisting that her support for Tinubu was based on personal conviction, not political influence or reward.

I voted for Tinubu because he is my choice,” she stated. “As a Nigerian, I have the right to make that decision. I have never collected or benefited from this government.”

She went on to condemn those accusing her of being on the government’s payroll, stating that such assumptions were unfounded and unfair. “To everyone who has cursed me based on the assumption that I’m ‘chopping’, I have asked God to return those curses upon their lives and children,” she wrote.

Afolabi-Brown, a mother of four, emphasised that her role at TVC should not automatically define her political stance. “There are plenty of Obidients working at TVC and earning their salaries. No one bothers them. I should not be judged simply because I have an opinion,” she added.

Some Nigerian entertainers have  publicly lamented that their support for Tinubu came with no payment or reward:

Veteran actor Fatai Adekunle “Lalude” Adetayo revealed that he, along with fellow Yoruba actors, including Ganiu “Alapini” Nafiu campaigned for Tinubu (and Lagos Governor Sanwo‑Olu) for over seven weeks but received nothing in return. They initially received ₦10,000 daily for food, which later stopped abruptly. Lalude said MC Oluomo had promised ₦1.5 million each, but no payment was ever made .

Alapini expressed regret for his efforts, saying he and more than 100 other actors campaigned voluntarily “out of love” and “for citizens’ well‑being,” only to receive no compensation or recognition .

Singer Portable (Habeeb Okikiola) admitted in August 2024 that he felt “used” when he supported Tinubu without receiving any payment. “I supported Tinubu but I didn’t get any money. I was used but I am calm,” he stated during an Instagram Live session .
