‘I Nearly Killed Myself’ — Ubi Franklin Reveals Suicidal Struggles After Failed Marriage to Lilian Esoro

Nigerian music executive and entrepreneur Ubi Franklin has opened up about his battle with depression and suicidal thoughts following the collapse of his marriage to Nollywood actress Lilian Esoro.

The couple married in a high-profile ceremony in November 2015 but separated within a year. Their divorce was officially finalised in January 2021 after a lengthy court process. The union produced a son, Jayden, born in July 2016.

In several interviews and Instagram posts since 2017, Franklin disclosed that he struggled severely between July 2016 and March 2017. He described contemplating suicide multiple times, with one low point coinciding with the end of his marriage and the departure of artist Iyanya from his Made Men Music Group (Triple MG).

“I nearly killed myself,” Franklin stated, recounting how the combined pressures left him unable to eat or sleep. He admitted to multiple failed suicide attempts during this period. What ultimately saved him, he said, were thoughts of his infant son. “Who will take care of my son?” became his anchor.

Franklin has since turned his experience into a message of hope, urging others not to see suicide as an option. He continues to co-parent with Esoro and has spoken about the importance of mental health awareness, resilience, and learning from personal failures despite material success.
