Nigerian singer, Oludipe David, better known as Spyro has shared how fear of failure and his father’s harsh words affected his early life and career journey.

Speaking in a recent interview with veteran media personality Frank Edoho, Spyro opened up about how he grew up believing he was not good enough because of the things his father used to say to him.

According to the “Who Is Your Guy” crooner, his father was very strict and often used negative words whenever he tried to correct him. Those words, he said, stayed in his mind and made him live in constant fear.

He explained that as a child, he began to believe he was a failure. This belief affected his confidence and performance in school.

Spyro said he struggled with poor grades all through secondary school and even doubted his ability to graduate from university when he finally got admission.

I thought I was going to die broke. I always had this fear of failure. And my dad contributed to that. He took every opportunity he got to always tell me that I am a failure,” Spyro said during the interview.

He added that it took years for him to overcome that mindset. According to him, the turning point came when he decided to build a personal relationship with God and started seeing himself differently.

Spyro revealed that before fame found him, he almost gave up on music completely.

He said there was a time he became so discouraged that he ventured into interior design to survive. But things took a new turn after he released his hit single ‘Who Is Your Guy’ in 2022, which became a massive success across Nigeria and beyond.
