David Adeleke, the Grammy-nominated Nigerian singer,  popularly known as Davido, has opened up about his early days in the music scene, revealing that he once ran errands for music moguls Don Jazzy and D’Banj while still trying to find his footing.

In a now-viral video making the rounds on social media, the Afrobeats star recalled how he used to freestyle for the duo back in Atlanta and was even sent to pick up McDonald’s for them, using his billionaire father’s Rolls Royce.

“In Atlanta, 2007 or 2008 or 2009… in my father’s house, I was freestyling for Don Jazzy and D’Banj. He sent me to go and buy McDonald’s with my papa car — Rolls Royce,” Davido said during the clip, sparking reactions from fans online.

At the time of the incident, Don Jazzy and D’Banj were already dominating the Nigerian music industry under their Mo’ Hits label.

The duo were regular faces on TV and radio, with hits like “Tongolo,” “Why Me,” and “Oliver Twist” gaining massive airplay across Africa and beyond. Their influence in the 2000s was unmatched, and they were widely regarded as pioneers of the modern Afrobeats sound.

Davido officially broke into the Nigerian music industry in 2011 with his hit single “Back When,” followed by “Dami Duro,” which quickly became a national anthem. He went on to release multiple hit songs and award-winning albums, cementing his place as one of Africa’s biggest music exports.

Over the years, he’s collaborated with international acts including Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, Lil Baby, and Usher, and has performed on global stages including the O2 Arena in London and the FIFA World Cup stage in Qatar.

In 2023, his fourth studio album Timeless earned him three Grammy nominations, making him one of the few Nigerian artists to reach that milestone.
