Nigerian singer, Spyro, has shared a personal story about how he faced strong pressure from people close to him in the music industry to change his brand and identity.
Speaking in a recent interview, the “Who’s Your Guy” crooner said the incident happened after he left his former record label in 2019 to start his own career journey.
According to Spyro, it was a tough period. He had no financial sponsor and had to borrow money from the bank and also collect loans from friends to push his music. He said his only capital was his determination, hard work, and strong faith in God.
However, not everyone on his team agreed with how he was presenting himself. Spyro said some of them came to him, advising that his open display of Christianity was not good for business.
“They told me to tone down my ‘Jesus Boy’ image, that it might scare away some opportunities and limit my growth,” he recalled.
Spyro explained that one of the suggestions they gave was for him to remove ‘Christ Ambassador’ from his social media profile.
“I remember telling them that I would rather die than remove Jesus from my profile. I understood their point, but I could not change who I am or hide my faith,” Spyro said.
When he refused, someone tried to convince him to at least replace it with ‘Child of God,’ saying it was a more general term. But Spyro said no, insisting that the name of Jesus would open the right doors for him.
Years later, Spyro said the same people who once doubted him are now calling to celebrate his progress.
“One of them told me recently, ‘A lot of artistes are suffering now, no deals, no shows but you are in a good place, and I am proud of you,’” the singer said.
