At the heart of the premiere of Nollywood’s latest musical drama, EVI, award-winning filmmaker Judith Audu, Omowunmi Dada, and Uzor Arukwe spoke out about the growing influence of women in the entertainment industry.
Actress Omowunmi Dada and producer Judith Audu highlighted the industry’s evolution, noting that women are no longer confined to limited roles but are now leading as filmmakers, directors and distribution executives.
Audu said the film was inspired by the need for stronger female representation and conversations around the realities women face in the music industry.
She explained that Evi explores themes of second chances, community support, fame and redemption, adding that audiences will connect with the layered storytelling.

Omowunmi Dada, on the other hand, shared that when she first joined the movie industry, women were mostly limited to roles such as acting, makeup artistry, or costume design and that was almost the extent of it.
However, she noted that things have changed significantly. Today, some of the highest-grossing filmmakers at the box office are women, and many of the leading directors in Nollywood are female. Women are also heading major distribution companies.
She described the film as a source of great joy for her, adding that when she read the script, she immediately felt the story needed to be told. She knew she wanted to be part of the project to help showcase that side of womanhood to the world.
Speaking at the premiere, actor Uzo Arukwe who plays Kola, described his character as a flawed talent manager battling addiction, arrogance and failure before finding redemption through the lead character.
He noted that the storyline mirrors the everyday struggles of Nigerians and emphasises perseverance and dedication to craft.
Media personality VJ Adams, who made a cameo appearance as a record label executive, described the film as an important narrative spotlighting the challenges women face as they try to break into the industry, noting that the story also reflects experiences across other sectors.
EVI premiered in Lagos on March 22nd, drawing attention to the struggles, resilience and rising influence of women navigating Nigeria’s music industry.
Directed by Uyoyou Adia, the film debuted at Filmhouse Cinemas IMAX, Lekki, on March 22, ahead of its nationwide cinema release scheduled for March 27.
The production features a cast including Osas Okonyon, Omowunmi Dada, Uzor Arukwe, Waje Iruobe, Ibrahim Suleiman, Ariyike Owolagba, Michael Ejoor, Tomiwa Tegbe and Joseph Onalapo.
