Katy Perry’s ‘365’ Video: a Tale of Unrequited Love

BY IKENNA OBIOHA
Collaborating with Russian-German music producer, Katy Perry dropped 365 on Valentine’s Day with an accompanying video. In the track’s lyrics, she showers unflinching attention on her love interest, so much, it is scaled using a full calendar year.
A pop track, 365 is cosmic textured sound built on repeated synths patterns layered with a dreamy chime that launches Perry’s buttery fast-paced vocals on its racing beats. With its sonic composition alluding to efforts from her Prism album, a confident sounding Perry helms the songs with a touch of sensuality.
While Perry is known for producing some of the catchiest tunes in pop’s anthology, her videos are usually ones of immersive experience, and 365 isn’t any different. A page off 2017’s Japanese manga adapted Ghost in the Shell, the visuals directed by Warren Fu explores the field of artificial intelligence (AI) with Perry in leading role.
Set in a tech lab, Perry renders her role as a cyborg that simulates human emotions as love and empathy. Programmed to meet the emotional needs of humans who couldn’t find love, she gets paired with Zedd who plays the role of a test subject to determine advances in the cybo AI’s ability to project these aforementioned characteristics when needed.
Perry tries her best to impress with good fashion and an unhealthy dose of subservience towards Zedd in order to please him. Zedd in a bid to elude her obsession towards him slips out of bed to sleep on a couch. When Perry notices his absence, she, being programmed to love, grabs him off the sofa. Zedd wakes up cuddled in her arm but Perry ran a system malfunction which resulted from a unrequited affection from Zedd in the course of the programme.
Visually, it is pleasing with aesthetics. Also, the visuals go a long way in guiding its audience through the story it portrays and overall audio production. It may not be Perry’s comeback hit single just yet, but it surely lays a good foundation for whatever projects she has in the pipes this year.
