Nollywood filmmaker and actor Kunle Afolayan has publicly responded to mounting criticism surrounding the second season of his Netflix series, Aníkúlápó: The Ghoul Awakens.
Speaking on 10 February 2026, the acclaimed director addressed negative reviews that followed the show’s premiere on the streaming platform on 30 January, insisting that the production was deliberately complex and designed to reward careful viewing.

Afolayan compared the intricate narrative structure of the fantasy drama to that of the globally celebrated series Game of Thrones, arguing that layered storytelling is not unusual in epic television.
He also noted that he had received encouraging feedback from academics and cultural scholars, whom he said appreciated the depth of the mythology and historical references embedded in the plot.

However, his remarks appeared to take aim at outspoken critics, including twitter influencer and commentator Sir Dickson, who had described the series as incoherent and anachronistic.
The director’s tone has since become a subject of debate in itself, with some viewers accusing him of sounding dismissive or elitist towards ordinary audiences.
