The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel (MDPIP) of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) have suspended three doctors from practising medicine in the country over medical negligence in the treatment of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege, one of the twin sons of renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege.
The suspended doctors are Dr Tunde Majekodunmi, Medical Director of Euracare, Dr Titus Ogundare, an anesthesiologist at Euracare, and Dr Atinuke Uwajeh, Chief Medical Officer/Director at Atlantis Pediatric Hospital.

Nkanu tragically passed away on January 7, 2026, following a brief illness that escalated into a serious infection. The child had been receiving care at Atlantis Pediatric Hospital in Lagos before being referred to Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital for diagnostic procedures in preparation for a medical transfer to Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States.
In a statement dated January 10, 2026, Adichie alleged gross negligence at Euracare, stating that her son was sedated but not properly monitored afterwards. According to her account, this led to unresponsiveness, seizures, cardiac arrest, and ultimately his death. She asserted, “He would be alive today if not for an incident at Euracare Hospital on January 6th.”
The family has previously described the loss as devastating, emphasising that Nkanu arrived stable for routine procedures but deteriorated rapidly due to alleged lapses in care.
