Mr Macaroni condemns police over death of WASSCE candidate in Ibadan

Adebowale Adedayo, who is better known as Mr Macaroni, who is a Nigerian actor and content creator, has condemned the Nigerian Police over  the death of a Secondary School student, killed on his way to write the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) examination in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The incident which sparked an outrage and calls for immediate investigation into the actions of the officers involved, happened on Gbagi market road in the Egbeda Local Government Area of the state.

According to reports, a yet-to-be identified police officer in pursuit of a suspect, shot sporadically, allegedly killing the student on Tuesday, May 20th. The student, according to multiple eyewitnesses, was on his way to the examination centre.

One of the sources, simply identified as Ajani, said, “A police officer opened fire while chasing a fleeing vehicle. One of the bullets reportedly hit the student. The student was riding on a motorcycle with his father and twin brother.

In response to the tragedy, market traders and sympathisers started a protest and brought the boy’s remains to the Oyo State Secretariat, demanding justice.

In a post via his 𝕏 handle, Macaroni blasted the Nigerian Police, calling them all sorts of names.

He wrote, “Wicked, Evil, Callous, irresponsible and shamelessly Corrupt @PoliceNG just killed an innocent boy in broad daylight!!! MURDERERS!!!”

Meanwhile, the Oyo State government in a statement on Tuesday disclosed that the deceased student’s father was driving against traffic when the incident happened.

The Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, described the incident as sad, shocking and painful, stressing the tragedy could have been avoided.

The government stated that it was during an attempt to apprehend the traffic offender that the policeman shot at the tyre of the car, which missed the target.

Oyo State government also promised to ensure justice is served and reassured the public that steps would be taken to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.
