Popular Nigerian actor, comedian and activist Adebowale “Debo” Adedayo, widely known as Mr Macaroni, has revealed why he chose to walk away from highly lucrative betting endorsement deals, despite previously working with betting companies.
The 33-year-old content creator made the disclosure while responding to a question about whether he had ever rejected major opportunities because they clashed with his personal values.
According to him, there have been several occasions where he deliberately turned down roles and endorsements after reflecting on the kind of impact they could have on people.
Mr Macaroni explained that although he once promoted betting brands, he eventually had a change of heart.
He was careful to point out that he does not condemn celebrities or influencers who still partner with betting companies, noting that adults should ultimately take responsibility for their own decisions rather than blaming public figures for every choice they make.
Speaking on his decision, he said: “Yes, there have been opportunities I’ve turned down because they conflicted with my personal values. One of them was promoting betting platforms. I used to promote betting brands, and I have absolutely nothing against people who still do.
He continued:”I respect many talented people who work with betting companies, and I believe adults are responsible for their own choices. We also have to hold ourselves accountable instead of blaming influencers for every decision people make.”
The actor went on to explain that his personal experiences played a significant role in changing his perspective.
He revealed that after facing a difficult financial period himself and hearing heartbreaking stories from people whose lives had been negatively affected by gambling, he no longer felt comfortable encouraging others to participate in betting.

He added: “However, I eventually decided to stop. After going through a difficult financial period myself and receiving messages from people whose lives had been negatively affected by betting, I felt it was no longer something I wanted to promote.”
He added that if his decision could prevent even one person from borrowing money or making reckless financial choices because of gambling, then walking away from those endorsement deals was worthwhile.
Mr Macaroni also disclosed that betting endorsements were not the only opportunities he had rejected, revealing that he had turned down certain film roles because he did not believe he could authentically portray the characters required of him.
