Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has come under sharp criticism from netizens after sharing a glamorous birthday post on Monday, August 24, 2026, the same day veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, was buried.
Akindele, who turned 49, posted photos of herself and a message of gratitude to God.
“Today is my birthday. My heart is full of gratitude to God for all He has done, all He is doing, and all that is still to come,” she wrote.
She thanked God for remaining her strength through every season, win, mistake and challenge, and prayed for good health, long life, peace and the grace to keep impacting lives.

The post sparked backlash as the Yoruba Nollywood community mourned Ogogo. The 66-year-old actor died on Sunday, August 23, after battling stage-four cancer and was laid to rest the following day in his hometown of Ilaro, Ogun State, according to Islamic rites. Colleagues including Yinka Quadri, Jide Kosoko, Dele Odule and others attended the emotional burial.
Many online users accused Akindele of insensitivity. One commenter asked if she “no dey read the room,” while another wrote: “Aunty Funke, shame on you! We are mourning the death of Ogogo. And you dey post about birthday. Omo, this is not fair.”
Others called the timing unwise and urged her to delete the post.
