Motilola Akinlami, Nollywood actress has opened up on the reason she publicly announced her divorce from her husband, Adekunle, a member of the Nigerian Air Force.
In a recent interview with fellow actress Biola Bayo, Motilola revealed that a blogger had threatened to expose her marital status, claiming she was living a lie. According to the actress, the blogger messaged her with allegations that she was no longer married and vowed to make it public.
Rather than succumb to the blackmail, Motilola took charge of the narrative and made the announcement herself.
“There was a blog at the time,” she explained. “The blogger messaged me and said, ‘You live in disguise. I know you’ve left your marriage, and I’m going to expose it.’ I thought, ‘You want to blackmail me at this point in my life, when I have nothing left to lose?’ So, I decided to post it myself.”
The mother of two went on to criticize those who shame women for leaving failed marriages, stressing that no sane woman enters a marriage hoping it will end.

“Except a woman is clinically insane, no one goes into marriage intending to leave,” she said. “You go in because you want forever. Some people talk as if there’s a new breed of women getting married just to walk away later. It makes no sense.”
Motilola first announced her divorce in 2021, stating that the decision was mutual and not due to violence or bitterness. She emphasised that while the marriage ended, their roles as co-parents to their two children remain unchanged.
Following her announcement, rumors surfaced linking her failed marriage to an alleged affair with fellow actor Kunle Afod. According to controversial blog Gistlover, Afod’s wife reportedly exposed the affair and claimed he fathered Motilola’s last child due to their striking resemblance. The blog also alleged that the scandal prompted Motilola’s husband to abandon her and their children.
Despite the noise, Motilola has chosen to speak her truth and move forward with her life.
