Who Really Owns Afrobeats?: A Deep Analysis By Omah Lay

Nigerians on social media have outrightly condemned Grammy-nominated singer, Omah Lay, after  referring to himself as “God.”

This comes after the Port Harcourt-born singer dished out several provocative claims in the lead-up to the April 3 release of his album ‘Clarity of Mind‘.

He said he is “Nigeria’s best artiste of the last 20 years” and called himself the “greatest Afrobeats artiste of the decade,” but he did add a caveat to that claim.

The controversy grew after Omah Lay posted an Instagram video in which he shared his personal views on life, God, and the universe.

“I believe in the creator. I believe in the universe. I believe in myself, mostly in myself because I believe I am God,” he said in the clip.

He went on to describe the creator as “somewhere having fun, editing it, taking some out, putting some back, keeping the balance. He is just improving his art every day, and I am just a puzzle”.

The singer shared that, no matter what God did with him, he feels that a part of the divine lives within him.

“He put a piece of himself inside me because I can create. I can bring things to life. I can imagine things that don’t exist and I can make them happen,” Omah Lay said.

“I believe there is a piece of him in every human being, and he designed something and put it on autopilot. I am not a religious person at all, but I just believe that there is a higher power. Your God can be anything you want him to be.”

The video, along with his recent claims of artistic supremacy, has drawn sharp reactions on social media, particularly on X.

One user wrote: “Banter aside Omah Lay is clearly going through a lot . Instead of turning it into jokes or content, maybe we should consider helping the b@stard before things get out of hand.”

Another wrote: “You guys are expressing frustration on Omah lay lol, I’m not even surprised about it, I’m just glad he came out bold let’s know the remaining ones.”

One added: “I can swear on my life that  omahlay no really mean all this thing him day do aje.   He is just trying to prevent that his new album from flopping.”

“Walai .@Omah_Lay whatever the call you if put slap for your face depression go leave you,”one remarked
