Popular Kannywood actor, Alhaji Mato Yakubu Nata’ala, has appealed to Nigerians for financial support as he continues his struggle with cancer, an illness he has been battling for almost two years.
In a video that has gone viral on social media, the actor explained that he has been undergoing treatment for about one year and seven months, but the cost has become too heavy for him to bear.
Mato Yakubu, who gained fame through his role in the Dadin Kowa drama series aired on Arewa 24, said the sickness has completely drained his savings. He noted that although some friends, religious leaders, and colleagues in the film industry have supported him, the expenses keep rising.
“I want to sincerely thank everyone who has been helping me, especially the groups of clerics, the Arewa 24 team and Kannywood Vanguard,” he said.
The actor revealed that his treatment requires him to pay ₦250,000 every three weeks for an injection, in addition to other hospital expenses. He also lamented that a hospital bed alone costs ₦51,000, making it difficult for him to keep up with payments.
“I am appealing for more support. Anyone I may have wronged should please forgive me. I am begging Nigerians to help me. May Allah reward and bless us all,” he added.

Mato Yakubu, who hails from Yobe State, is one of the respected figures in the Hausa film industry. In a past interview with BBC Hausa in 2021, he disclosed that he began his acting career in 1986. He also revealed that apart from acting, he has written more scripts than the number of movies he has personally featured in.
