On her feelings about winning an Emmy vs Oscar, she said: “It is very cool to be 47 and [have] this shit be new. Having this experience now, I see a whole ‘nother regard for film.”

On what influences her acting, she said that she her trained herself by watching Marla Gibbs. She said: “It was like college; Marla was the first boss lady I got to see up close and personal.”

King left TV-only productions with three Emmys to her name: one for playing Aliyah Shaheed in “American Crime”, one for playing Terri LaCroix in the second season of the same show and another for portraying the role of a mother Latrice in Netflix’s “Seven Seconds”.

She also produces and directs episodes in series like “Being Mary Jane”, “Scandal”, “Insecure” and “This Is Us”.
