Shatta Wale, the Ghanaian dancehall singer, has been detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra over a tax investigation.

His management confirmed the development, saying the artiste, whose real name is Charles Nii Armah, went to EOCO by himself on Wednesday.

This comes after his yellow Lamborghini was seized. The car is said to be linked to a fraud case in the United States involving another Ghanaian, Nana Kwabena Amuah. Amuah is serving seven years in a US prison after scamming many organisation through fake vendor deals.

Wale’s management explained that his detention is only about “tax obligations” and did not comment on the US fraud case.

The luxury car, worth about $150,000, is expected to be sent back to America to help pay back Amuah’s victims. Shatta Wale has denied knowing Amuah, saying he only bought the car as a “third-party owner” and was not aware of who shipped it to Ghana.

Shatta Wale is one of Ghana’s biggest music stars. He gained global recognition in 2019 after featuring on Beyoncé’s hit song ‘Already’.

His team has asked fans to remain calm while his lawyers work with authorities. “We want to assure the public that his legal team is on top of the matter,” a statement from his camp said.

The car seizure is part of a wider operation between Ghana and the US to break fraud rings. Earlier this month, three Ghanaians accused of running a $100 million internet scam were extradited to the US.
