“She Was Fine at the Show” — Family Recounts Heartbreaking Final Day of Juju Star Saint Janet

The children of veteran Nigerian Juju and Highlife musician Iyun Janet Ajilore, popularly known as Saint Janet, have opened up about their mother’s final hours.

In an interview with Akorede TV, the singer’s children Omowunmi, Fola and son Orinayo revealed that their mother complained of chest pain and struggled to breathe shortly before her death.

Omowunmi recalled that Saint Janet had performed at an overnight event in Sango, Ogun State, the night before and showed no signs of illness. “She performed the previous night. People even celebrated her with applause. We did not suspect anything,” she said.

The following day, the singer went to the market, returned home around 6 pm, and prepared her own meal. Shortly after, Omowunmi noticed her mother holding her chest. “She said she felt like something wanted to drop off her chest. Her breathing was no longer regular,” she recounted.

Family members rushed her to the hospital, where she was placed on oxygen. Within minutes of admission, while medical staff searched for a pulse, Saint Janet passed away. Orinayo confirmed she had difficulty breathing, while Fola emphasised that their mother had not been sick prior to the sudden episode.

Her long-time manager also noted she appeared healthy during her final performance. The family has begun a nine-day prayer period, with funeral rites scheduled for August 25 and 26, 2026.
