In the wake of the tragic death of socialite Elena Jessica from complications following a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure, prominent Nollywood filmmaker and Association of Nigeria Cinematographers Producers (ANCOP) president Joe Akatugba has issued a strong caution to young women aspiring to enter the film industry.
Akatugba, also known as Theophilus Akatugba, emphasised that true success in Nollywood stems from talent, discipline, creativity, and professionalism not from cosmetic enhancements aimed at enhancing physical appearance to attract attention or roles.

“The tragic death of Elena Jessica has deeply saddened me and many others,” Akatugba stated in a recent television interview and social media message.
”Although she was not a member of the Nollywood industry, her passing has sparked widespread conversations because many believe that a growing number of actresses and aspiring actresses are engaging in body enhancement procedures in the hope of gaining attention or opportunities,” he added.

He urged young talents to prioritise honing their craft over chasing superficial ideals. “My message to aspiring actors and actresses is clear: focus on developing your talent and understanding the craft of filmmaking rather than relying on physical appearance. Nollywood is built on talent, discipline, and storytelling—not cosmetic surgery.”
The warning comes amid heightened scrutiny of BBL procedures in Nigeria, which have been linked to serious health risks and fatalities. Elena Jessica reportedly underwent a revision BBL in Lagos, leading to severe complications that ultimately claimed her life.
