Fuji music star Taye Currency’s performance at the coronation of Oba Rashidi Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland has generated controversy among social media users.
Despite being the official entertainer, his Fuji rendition didn’t quite match the ceremony’s tone, with many critics arguing that his lyrics were out of place.

Taye Currency sang “Were la fi n wo were,” a Yoruba phrase that translates to “It takes madness to understand madness” and the line has been at the center of the backlash, with many questioning its relevance to the occasion.

The ceremony, held at Mapo Hall in Ibadan, was attended by notable figures, including President Bola Tinubu, Governor Seyi Makinde, amongst other governors, traditional rulers and political figurines.
While some fans rallied around the singer, others described his performance as an “embarrassment” to Ibadan indigenes. Many social media users suggested that other Fuji artists, such as Saheed Osupa or KWAM 1, would have been more suitable choices for the occasion.
“Werey la fi’wo werey na song? Nonsense,” Frank24net said.
“Total Embarrassment to his family. NOT Ibadan people. On coronation day?” olatunbosun006 questioned.
Fortune4me_ola reacting to the viral video write; “Who gave him mic to sing this rubbish in coronation”.
OluwaferanmiDan commented; “It’s not his fault now; it’s the fault of the organizers that decided to platform someone whose last musical boom was 17 years ago. Weyrey la fi n wo weyrey ni coronation? Afi weyrey naa”.
“It’s obviously political. Why picking Taye over Osupa or K1 for coronation, even Paso and Malaika will deliver well. É sha ma fi werey ghade lo,” babasafeez said.
“It was an historic disappointment, an embarrassment to Ibadan indigenes at home and in the diaspora. The songs rendered were not fitting for such a historic occasion. I am certain there are thousands of musicians of Ibadan origin who would have delivered a stellar performance,” fesooyebade commented.
Despite the online criticism, Taye Currency ignored the backlash and performed again at Oba Ladoja’s reception, delivering another lively show. Fans speculated about how much he was paid for his performances, with some defending his artistry.
The coronation of Oba Rashidi Ladoja marks a new era for Ibadanland, blending tradition with modernity. As the first Olubadan from the Arusa Compound of Isale-Osi, his reign promises to usher in peace, progress, and prosperity for the kingdom.
