Nigerian singer Tems has opened up about an awkward yet memorable moment from one of the biggest nights of her career, recalling the evening Wizkid won a major international award for their hit collaboration.
Speaking candidly about the experience, Tems revealed that the most expensive dress she has ever worn to an event was on the night of the BET Awards, when the song Essence, featuring Tems and Justin Bieber, received global recognition.
According to the singer, she had no idea that Wizkid would be absent from the ceremony, which left her feeling uncertain when the award was announced.
Tems admitted that the situation felt deeply awkward, as she was unsure whether she should step forward to accept the award on his behalf. She explained that the unexpected moment caught her off guard, especially given the significance of the win and the international spotlight surrounding the event.

In her words: “The highest dress I ever wore to an event was the night Wizkid won an award at the BET with Essence ft me and Justin. It was so awkward for me cus I never knew Wizkid will not show up. So when we won, I didn’t know if I was to accept it or not.”
Despite the uncertainty, the night remains a landmark moment in Tems’ career, symbolising the global success of African music and the widespread acclaim for “Essence”.
