Teni Sparks Outrage With Tribal Comment on Erica

Nigerian singer Teniola Apata, popularly known as Teni, has sparked outrage on social media platforms after referring to disqualified BBNaija season 5 housemate, Erica as ‘Omo Igbo’.

Amid the controversial love triangle between Laycon, and Erica, the talented singer had taken to her twitter page to express concern for the 26-year old rapper.

In the video clip, Teni said “You Igbo people, leave Laycon alone. Erica has… They’ve laid a curse on Laycon. Laycon is under a spiritual love attack. He must be released. Every spirit of mumu, ode, oponu, be released.”

With few days left for the show to wrap up, some Twitter users called out the singer and accused her of being a tribalst and hating the disqualified housemate.

While some users have maintained that the singer ought to apoligise for her comment, others have said that the singer has done nothing wrong.

"Omo Igbo" is not ordinarily derogatory because it literally means "Igbo person" but what we're not going to do is pretend that it isn't used in a particular context as an ethnic slur. Pls and pls.

Teni clearly lacks emotional intelligence to understand that context matters.

You don't address Erica as "Omo Igbo". Same way I don't expect Rita Dominic or any Igbo celeb to address Laycon as "Onye ofe mmanụ".

Yes the term "Omo Igbo" is not derogatory, its the fact that Teni chose to use the label. As a celeb she should know better than using tribal labels. I'm Igbo and have been rooting for Laycon from Day one, I so much hate that we've brought a tribal brawl out of this thing again
