The City of Chicago Sues Jussie Smollett

Apparently, Jussie Smollett is not completely free from the heat he faced since January for allegedly faking a hate crime.

The city of Chicago, feeling that they had wasted their time and resources, have sent a letter to Smollett’s team demanding the sum of $130,000 to reimburse the cost of investigating what they said were false claims, TMZ reports.

A city spokesperson told TMZ, “Mr. Smollett has refused to reimburse the City of Chicago for the cost of police overtime spent investigating his false police report on January 29, 2019. The Law Department is now drafting a civil complaint that will be filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County. Once it is filed, the Law Department will send a courtesy copy of the complaint to Mr. Smollett’s L.A. based legal team.”

According the law, the city is free to ask for three times the actual cost of an investigation. For Smollett’s case, this brings potential damages to $390,000.

The 16 felony count charge facing the actor was dropped recently by the state’s attorney.
