Renowned musician and producer, Cobhams Asuquo, has expressed his disappointment and frustration with the Grammy Awards, stating that the prestigious music awards are exploiting Nigerian artists to boost the US economy.
In a recent video, Cobhams Asuquo made the scathing remark, “I think Grammy is using Nigerians to boost the GDP of Los Angeles. It’s like a carrot dangling in front of us, and it goes away.”

This comments come after no Nigerian artist won a category at the 68th Grammy Awards after having a line up of top Nigerian artistes like Burna Boy, Davido, and Ayra Starr. According to Cobhams, the Grammys dangle validation “like a carrot” to Nigerian artists, only for it to slip away.
Cobhams Asuquo calling for Nigerian stakeholders to focus on building their own homegrown award platforms. “I think we need to build something that is ours. Let’s grow something that can make other people converge in our space,” he emphasized.
He drew a comparison with American sports culture, citing the Super Bowl as a successful example. “It’s only America that will do the Super Bowl and be playing it themselves,” he added.
By building their own platforms, Cobhams believes Nigerian artists can take control of their industry and create opportunities that benefit their own community.
