Veekee James, the popular fashion designer has opened up about her background and journey in the fashion industry, saying she will never hide where she came from.
She described her success story as proof of God’s grace.
Veekee made this known while speaking on The Nancy Isime Show, where she shared personal memories about her childhood and how her life experiences shaped her career.

The designer recalled growing up in Ajegunle, Lagos, and said one particular memory from her childhood has remained with her till today. She explained that she decided to speak publicly about her past after she and her husband, Femi Atere, faced heavy criticism over a video they posted online.

“The reason I told that story at the event where I went to speak publicly was because of the content that my husband and I posted on social media,” she said.
According to her, some of the comments she received online made her reflect deeply on her journey. She revealed that people accused her of damaging her brand with the video.
“I saw people on Twitter saying things like, ‘So you built your brand for five years, making dresses for people with money and people with class, and then you went ahead to taint that image with such a classless video.’ Those were some of the comments I read,” Veekee explained.
The designer noted that the backlash only reminded her of how far she had come and how much her life was shaped by faith and determination.
“It just brought me back to the fact that if it were by human power, I would not be where I am today. I’m here because God made it possible. I was just a girl who grew up without a father from the age of five, and I had to work my way up to this point,” she added.
Veekee stressed that she would never deny her humble beginnings or pretend to be someone else because of society’s idea of what is considered ‘classy.’
“We are here today because we started from somewhere. I cannot change my story and pretend I did not grow up in Ajegunle just to fit into the class that some people want me to belong to. I will never be that person. I will always remain myself, and that is why I am Veekee James. I am not any other fashion designer,” she declared.
