Nigerian Afrobeats superstar, Tiwa Savage has revealed the true inspiration behind one of the songs on her latest album, ‘This One is Personal’.

The track, titled 10%, was released as the sixth song on the album. According to Tiwa, it was not just a work of fiction but was born out of a real-life experience that happened while she was in the studio.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra, the singer explained that she had been recording music when she received a message on her phone. The message came from someone asking about her whereabouts.

This is a real-life story. I was recording this album when I got a text. The person was like, ‘oh what are you doing?’ and I said, ‘I’m just in the studio’. He said, ‘just come over, man’. I told him I was recording and he was like, ‘this is your problem’,” Tiwa recounted.

She noted that the response made her reflect on her personality. According to her, she often overthinks situations instead of acting on impulse. On that day, however, she decided to do the unexpected.

Tiwa said she immediately left the studio and headed for her car. She also recalled that her phone battery was already low at the time.

My phone was even about to die, I got into the car and was telling my driver, ‘you have to hurry up because my phone is on 10%’. And literally that’s the name of the song called 10%,” she added.

The multiple award-winning artiste explained that the song tells the story of how she chose to be spontaneous rather than remain in her usual routine. The lyrics capture the moment she left her studio session to follow her instincts.
