Tragedy has struck in Oyo State as a teacher at Soun High School, Mr. Fatai Adegoke, lost his life after being viciously attacked by students while attempting to stop them from gambling during school hours.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident unfolded when Mr. Adegoke confronted a group of students gambling in the classroom. What began as a disciplinary action quickly turned violent as the students ganged up on him, reportedly beating him and breaking his limbs in the process.
Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Mr. Adegoke succumbed to the severe injuries he sustained. His death has sparked outrage across the education sector. A statement from a coalition of concerned educators mourned his loss, describing him as a dedicated and disciplined teacher who died in the line of duty.
Speaking further, they emphasised that the assault was not just on one man but on the teaching profession as a whole.“This horrifying act reflects the growing moral decay in our schools and homes,” the statement read, calling on authorities including the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), TESCOM, and law enforcement to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice. They also urged that parents of the students involved be held accountable.
However, the students involved are reportedly on the run, and efforts to get official police confirmation were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
