Social media commentator VeryDarkMan has stirred fresh controversy online after launching a scathing critique of Afrobeat star Wizkid over his recent comments relating to the late music icon Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and his exchange with activist-musician Seun Kuti.

In a widely shared statement, VeryDarkMan argued that Wizkid should not have claimed to be bigger than Fela, insisting that the singer would have been better served responding directly to Seun Kuti rather than invoking the legendary Afrobeat pioneer’s name.

He questioned the basis of Wizkid’s international accolades, particularly his Grammy award, asking whether it was earned primarily for his vocal performance.

He said “Wizkid’s Grammy success was strongly influenced by American superstar Beyoncé”, whom he noted has consistently paid homage to Fela’s legacy.

He went on to highlight that Fela’s classic protest anthem Zombie has already been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, using this as a benchmark to contrast the two artistes’ perceived cultural impact.

VeryDarkMan further claimed that Wizkid’s catalogue would not achieve similar recognition until long after his lifetime. He singled out Essence as the singer’s biggest global hit but suggested that, should the track ever receive Hall of Fame status, it would be credited jointly with Tems rather than to Wizkid alone.
