Popular Nigerian activist and social media critic Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has publicly reacted to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN)’s press release confirming the arrest of four suspected bandits near Akure Airport on Sunday.

In a viral video circulating widely on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, VeryDarkMan described the FAAN statement as “very disturbing,” expressing alarm over the proximity of the suspects to the airport fence in the Eleyewo community area.

“FAAN released a very disturbing press statement yesterday Sunday saying four suspected bandits were apprehended close to the airport fence by security operatives,” VeryDarkMan said in the clip. “Only God knows what would have happened if they had accessed the main airport building… Imagine if they made their way to the airport and hijacked an airplane with passengers onboard.”

He questioned the authorities’ transparency, demanding visual evidence. “Can they provide pictures or videos of the suspected bandits they arrested? Normally, security operatives always video suspects,” he added, suggesting the announcement might be a ploy to justify budget requests for enhanced perimeter fencing.

Ondo State Police have since countered parts of FAAN’s account, stating the arrested individuals were logistics suppliers linked to kidnappers rather than bandits, and disputing the number of suspects involved.
