Veteran Nigerian producer Wale Adenuga has responded to claims of financial hardship made by actor Abiodun Ayoyinka, popularly known as Papa Ajasco from the long-running comedy series Papa Ajasco and Company.
In an official statement, Wale Adenuga and WAP countered the narrative, asserting that Ayoyinka has received substantial support over the years.
They highlighted that he was once gifted a car (along with Pa James) and has used at least five vehicles, including a Mercedes-Benz, during his association with the production house. WAP claimed, to the best of their knowledge, that the actor owns a house in Ogun State, questioning the basis of his “broke” declarations.

The statement also referenced Ayoyinka’s over 30 years as a Lagos State civil servant, inquiring about his retirement gratuities and investments from that career.

WAP emphasized that artists are not restricted from other income sources, as filming typically requires only about six weeks annually, allowing time for side ventures. They maintained consistent fulfillment of financial obligations and dismissed allegations of neglect or exploitation as misleading.

The controversy began when Ayoyinka, in a recent interview, revealed struggles including low pay (around ₦45,000–₦60,000 per episode in recent times, compared to ₦22,500 in 1997), no personal house or car, and limited opportunities due to the character’s trademark ownership by Wale Adenuga Productions (WAP). He noted that the registration prevents him from using the Papa Ajasco persona for endorsements or other gigs without permission, contributing to his financial difficulties despite decades in the role and prior civil service retirement benefits.
