Nollywood actress Omowunmi Dada has opened up about what she describes as the challenges faced by dark-skinned actors in the Nigerian movie industry in the past.
The 36-year-old actress spoke about the period when complexion allegedly played a significant role in determining who was considered suitable for certain roles.
According to her, being dark-skinned could sometimes limit an actor’s opportunities, particularly for those hoping to secure prominent roles in the industry.
Dada suggested that the pressure to fit into certain beauty standards contributed to the growing trend of skin bleaching among some people in the entertainment industry.

She said: “The way Nollywood industry was back in the days, if you were too dark, no one will cast you. That was why people were bleaching their skins.”
However, her statement has once again drawn attention to conversations surrounding colourism and beauty standards in the entertainment industry.
According to Dada, the situation was particularly difficult for dark-skinned performers who may have felt that their complexion could affect their chances of being cast.
This, she suggested, created pressure for some individuals to alter their appearance through skin-lightening products.
Dada, has established herself as one of Nollywood’s respected actresses through her performances in film and television.
Among her notable achievements is her 2015 Best of Nollywood (BON) Award for Best Supporting Actress in an English film for her role in Ojuju.
She also received a nomination for Best Lead Actress at the 2024 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) for her performance in Asiri Ade.
